T he Banyan--With academic symposium, cultural festivals and
thematic activities, the National Cheng Kung University Hospital
(NCKUH) celebrated her 20 year anniversary from May to July.
President Ma Ying-Jeou (馬英九) telegrammed to extend his
congratulations before the Anniversary Assembly on June 12th. He
especially praised the quality medical service provided by the
Hospital. Vice President Vincent Siew (蕭萬長) congratulated the
Hospital. Born in southern Taiwan, he appreciated the Hospital’s
contribution to the healthcare for southern Taiwan residents. As a
Chairperson for the Economic Planning Development 20 years ago, Mr.
Siew was one of the facilitators for NCKUH. He was delighted to see
that the Hospital had evolved to be the leading medical institution
in southern Taiwan. The NCKUH can now boast herself with
accomplishments such as providing quality healthcare service,
nurturing medical professionals and making prominent research
contributions.
Another significant anniversary gift was the
debut of the book Benefiting Others Whenever Possible Is As Valuable
As the Contribution by a Superior Prime Minister by Mr. Han-Ming
Hsia, former NCKU President and NCKUH Superintendent. The book
recorded first-hand information of the birth process of NCKUH. With
a sense of mission, Mr. Hsia and other team members enlisted
influential politicians, education officers, business people and
medical professionals for help to fulfill his dream-- establishing a
medical institution for southern Taiwan residents. Love is the
essence of the medical sciences, as conveyed in the vows of the
medical doctors; this book, with articles contributed by other
founders of NCKUH, illuminates many hearts and rekindles the light
of ideals for readers.
Dr. Michael Ming-Chiao Lai (賴明詔),
NCKU President, Dr. Chih-Hung Chen (陳志鴻), NCKUH Superintendent, and
Dr. Chyi-Her Lin (林其和), Dean of NCKU College of Medicine, expressed
their gratitude for all the praise and encouragement bestowed upon
the Hospital. The 20 year anniversary is the starting point of
another dream. With the vision to become the ideal medical center
for the public, they expect to celebrate the 30 year anniversary in
the future.
